Swimming WA's 2010 SunSmart State Open Swimming Championships concluded on Saturday 30^th January 2010 at Challenge Stadium.

200 swimming athletes took to the pool across the four day event breaking a total of 56 records that included 38 state records and 18 country records. The athlete's hard work and dedication has proven to have paid off with an overall of 32% of swimmers improving on their entry times at the Championships.

13 year old young gun Brianna Throssell from City of Perth tallied 13 records closely followed by 18 year old Blair Evans, also from City of Perth with 12 records.

Country Swimmers, Adele Schultz and Kate Bird both from Bunbury Swimming Club also had some fantastic swims with Adele breaking 10 country records and Kate breaking 8 county records.

12 year old Chelsea Unwin from Riverton Blue Marlins broke 3 state records and Alexander Taylor from Southside Penhros Wesley broke 2 state records.

14 year old Ross Hendry from Aquajets broke 4 records in the Boys 14yrs/U 1500m Freestyle, a record that has stood for eighteen and a half years. Ross also broke the WA All Time & Residential in the Boys 14yrs/U 800m Freestyle record as a split time whilst completing his 1500m.

For many of the swimmers who competed at the 2010 SunSmart Sate Open Championships now qualify to compete in the 2010 Telstra Australian Open Championships / Commonwealth Trials in Sydney, being held from 15^th -21^st March 2010. This will be a fantastic opportunity for WA swimmers to showcase their talent.  For the first time national competition swimmers we hope that the State Open Championships experience was a positive one to help further your swimming career.

It is an exciting time for WA swimmers and we look forward to watching them compete at the Australian Open and Australian Age Championships.

The sportsmanship shown in and around the pool by the athletes and coaches was commendable and the professionalism of the Technical Officials should also be highly praised.
